Meet Lia St. James.
She’s the ultimate small town girl—public school student, hamburger and fries enthusiast, and blue jeans fan. She lives with her mom in Four Winds, Ohio, dates the town mechanic’s son, and has a summer job lined up at the local diner. What she knows about high society could fit on the end of a toothpick.
But all that changes when Lia’s mother dies, and Lia moves to Boston to live with her mother’s parents—whom she has never met. With only a small suitcase, she enters the appealing but oppressive world of privilege her mother escaped from seventeen years earlier.
When her grandparents enroll her at Fairhaven, an exclusive private school, Lia is thrust into a world of glittering parties, clothes by designers she’s never heard of, cute but conceited boys who won’t take no for an answer, and jealous girls who will do anything to get to the top. Despite the academic challenges and dog-eat-dog social life, Lia slowly gains a foothold in her new world, making friends with one of the scholarship students and the editor of the school paper. Simultaneously, she attracts the attention of Fairhaven’s big man on campus and faces the wrath of his numerous exes.
As her first semester comes to an end, will this unexpected debutante stay true to herself or will she succumb to the temptation to fit in? How will she react when she discovers her father’s identity? And what will she do about the blond Adonis with a trust fund the size of Fort Knox who continues to pursue her?

I enjoyed the story but hoped for more. There were 2 interesting characters but unfortunately one was dead (the Mother) and the other, Devon, we saw too little of. Lia, the main character, often struck me as shallow or at least as lacking in curiousity.

The story is a very straightforward rags-to-riches tale. But where is Lia's heart? Suddenly wealthy she turns her back on her old friends - indeed her old life is very much a mystery as there is almost nothing said about it. Her mom dies in the first few pages of the book and she was by all indications someone with a lot of spunk, and very much liked in the little town she lived in. But with her Mom's death, in no time at all, Lia has discovered her wealthy Boston Brahmin grandparents and fled to them. Her boyfriend, and friends forgotten. (It turns out her boyfriend and best friend have been seeing each other behind her back, but Lia's reaction to this, and the non-existence of any communication with them just lacked credibility.) Her grandparents take Lia in and arrange her Mom's funeral - and nothing is heard of from the townfolks her Mom spent her adult life with. Soon she is going to an exclusive private school where she captures the eye of the resident rich hottie who is also a cad. And with his roving eye on Lia the school mean girls take notice, but they are very tepid mean girls so actually nothing much seems to happen between Lia and them. She also makes friends with a scholarship student and a middleclass geek which is what I could imagine happening, but again I felt the relationships very tepid. They are very much background. I also didn't like the portrayal of Andre the scholarship student, an African-American there because of his basketball prowess, and seemingly smitten with Lia. This would have been a good story since her grandparents very much disapproved of him. But no, Landon, rich playboy is her heart's desire. WHY? To me, the subtext is stating that Lia is no girl to take to heart - she forgets her working class friends and is sucked into wealth and privilege, and quickly takes on the attitudes of that (often horrible) class.

What is it we are supposed to like about Lia? She does have some spunk, and she does come across as a teenager. But otherwise she acts with such a lack of curiosity about herself and her circumstances that she will be a future wealthy snob.

Still this is a reasonably well told tale. The scenes tie together and other than at the very beginning there are no awkward transistions. I would have spent more time on Lia's small town life with her Mom, or perhaps told it in flashbacks. There are hints that the characters may not accede to their privileged futures without a fight and since this is the first of a series that is a good thing. Lia's grandparents are not stock figures, they feel real, and obviously care for their granddaughter.

I will likely read the next book in this series because there are more strengths than weaknesses in the work. But I would dearly love to see Lia have some discomfort at her change in fortune, to know from her past that while she can go to sleep knowing she is secure for life, her old friends cannot, that some are but a father's layoff from being in a homeless shelter. I know this isn't what the series is really about - it's a YA contemporary romance - but setting it up as she does, Lia has to engage us as a decent human being.

Great plot and interesting story about young lady losing her mom. Finding her grandparents and finding her father as well. I look forward to reading Book 2 of The Debutante Series. Great story
An exceptional young adult read about a 16 year old girl who deals with loss, discovers
the existence of her wealthy grandparents and later her father. She experiences many challenges
of school, love and the great divide brought by wealth.
