Grunts Mary Gentle 9780451454539 Books

Not your ordinary Sword and Sorcery books. I have had this book for years and years. Got the kindle edition and it had discussions from Mary about the authoring process. I knew they had a ton of fun writing this.

Be advised, this is a dark book. Not that it isn't funny, but there aren't really any pure heroes. The main characters are all flawed, quite badly, but the story is believable and I love, love, love the humor. Being an ex-sailor, I can totally relate to the portrayal of the "marines" in this novel. Spot on with an orcish bent.

If you don't hold your Sword and Sorcery too much like a religion, you will probably love this book. It exposes how silly a lot of the typical cliches are when confronted with folks who actually know how to fight and coordinate. "THEY ARE MAWINES MOMMY!!"

Awesome, Awesome, Awesome!

Grunts Mary Gentle 9780451454539 Books Reviews

Everyone knows if you steal a dragons horde of valuables you will encounter the curse. In this case, Orc's sent by the Nameless Necronamcer steal a dragons horde- which happens to be Military Hardware from all over the world. The Orc's are then cursed,,,by being turned into United States Marine (Orc and Magic sniffing/detection division)
What is a Grunt? What is an Ork? Take your High Epic where good wins and the cannon-fodder complains! Believe what it's like to be the runt of the Dread Dark army and see why rooting for the Bad grunt is a Good idea!
Anyone who has read sci-fi and fantasy has run into one (or one hundred) too many bad Tolkien knock-offs. Usually the ones that have reviews on the back along the lines of "A bold new fantasy in the tradition of The Lord of the Rings".
This shambling undead corpus of lousy fantasy deserved a stake through the heart and garlic stuffing. Terry Pratchett provided this service to the quasi-McCaffery and pseudo-Lieber genre in the first two Discworld books. Mary Gentle does much the same to crappy Tolkien knock-offs with "Grunts". It dismembers the cliches, worries the carcass for a while, and buries what's left.
The language is bawdy. The humor is often coarse. But it's funny as hell.
Crude, rude and overall fun but hey they're Orc Marines so what did you expect? The author takes just about every high-fantasy trope and tosses them into a blender with modern military humor and hits frappe button. The result is a hilarious send-up of just about every fantasy cliche you can think of.
Grunts begins like a typical fantasy novel, with a horde of orcs working for a necromancer as they prepare themselves for a final assault against the forces of light and good. Things take a weird turn when the greenskins find the ancient lair of a dragon filled with all kind of modern weapons, like rifles, tanks, and assault helicopters.

Along with this arsenal, orcs also acquire the attitude and language of marines, and use modern military tactics in different combat situations. The battles between the orc marines and elfs, paladins and halflings is the high point of the book, filled with one liners like “pass me another elf, this one is split”, and when a general hears he is charged with crimes against humanity he answers “thank you.”

The reader should be warned that the book revels in it’s black humor and political incorrectness. The violence is very graphic, as are the rape jokes.

I liked the idea of Grunts, but it seemed to me like a joke stretched too far. After the initial novelty and baddass factor of ORC MARINES elapses, the reader is left with unidimensional characters whose motivations change just because the plot needs them to, wooden plots and deus ex machina moments. Out of nowhere, a race of sentient space insects shows up, out of nowhere they are defeated. It was a bit of a struggle to read all the way through.

Grunts seemed for me like a hyperactive child babbling whatever crazy idea came to her mind. At first it is charming, but soon you are staring at your watch wondering when it will end.
The premise is great. The execution a bit disappointing, as the story meanders quite a bit, while the writing is not always as clear as it could be.

The violence is over-the-top (but comical, like a production of Titus Andronicus I saw once.) Decent but not stellar satire of Tolkien fantasy tropes. Racist elves. At points, I really wanted the orcs to machine gun everyone.
Orc marines?! This book has taken high fantasy and bred it with sci-fy, then nursed the result with low comedy. The result is one of the most entertaining, hilarious, and strangely endearing books I've ever read.
