Because of my love of writing cookbooks and Sue’s of writing novels, we were brought together by a mutual friend, author Marilee Brothers, and I can never thank Marilee enough for the opportunity to find Sue and her books.

I just finished Susan Roebuck’s book, Rising Tide and the twists and turns at first had me thinking, “No, what are the chances of that happening…..” until I shifted my thinking to the delight of a magical story and I was lost in the lives of Piper and Leo and the loving world of Luminosa. Sue’s mastery of putting words together to develop a picture which immerses the reader is so completely beyond my scope of putting words together for a coherent recipe, I am in awe!

Her knowledge of fishing and the ocean isn’t just ‘book learning’ – she somehow absorbed the sense and love of this way of life. Thanks for a great read, Sue and now I’m off to find Hewhay Hall!!

Rising Tide is a wonderful book about two different people. Leo Shine is a fisherman who lives in Alaska and loses his father and brother to a freak wave that capsizes their boat. The authorities find that they were smuggling illegal cargo and Leo's only clue is the Portuguese village of Luminosa that his mother had come from.
Piper Pines lives in Norfolk, England on the coast and wants to know about her long-dead mother. She travels to Luminosa to find answers. Leo and Piper meet and together have to solve their riddles and deal with drug syndicates, scheming criminals, and long ago mysteries.
This is a lovely thriller about the dangers of the sea as well as the longing that some people have for being on the ocean. The story is true so that you can feel the heat of the Portuguese sun and the salt in the air. The villagers are interesting and the various strands of the plot interweave to a very satisfactory conclusion.
Leo and Piper are two special people. One lives in Alaska, the other in Norfolk, England. Leo had been born with a cowl covering his body and he attributed this to his ability to sense storms at sea. Piper could see colours in the sea which defined what lurked beneath the waves, good or evil, food or danger.

Curiosity concerning their missing mothers draw them to a small village of Luminosa in Portugal. Leo is mistaken for an investor in a building proposal but Piper has suspicions he is not as he seems.

Leo and Piper are strong characters and their suspicions of one another can be amusing. Their abilities help the people of Luminosa in their quest to stop the ruination of their village. I felt empathy with all the characters (except for the baddies) and found it a warm and intriguing book which I enjoyed reading. It had highs and lows which kept me engaged with the story and mystery which meant my curiosity as to the outcome was kept alive at all times.

Although only a sweet romance, the tension between Leo and Piper was definitely the main draw of the story and I eagerly continued reading to see what the outcome would be. I would definitely read another book by this author.

Roebucks writing style has a lyrical cadence. There's an easy ebb and flow to the pacing of the sentences and when perspective shifts, the author maintains an ease of flow while presenting wholly different patois and uniquely shaped characters. Leo and Piper are introduced in their own worlds before coming together in the scenic and secretive Luminosa. Both characters are thought to have a lightly supernatural gift; Leo was born with a cawl over his face so that he can predict storms and Piper can read the colors of the sea.

The melodious nature of Roebuck's writing style makes Rising Tide's 308 pages flow quickly. If there were formatting or technical errors, I didn't notice them. If you're looking for beauty in your fiction, Roebuck's Rising Tide is a slam dunk.
Some books seem to fall into our laps at exactly the right time. Sometimes they answer questions, sometimes they take us away from the press of stress. Sometimes, they illuminate situations and even worlds we have never considered, in perfect, soft light. Some books, like Susan Roebuck’s Rising Tide, seem to do it all.

This is a novel of people needing answers. Ms. Roebuck’s characters are beautifully rendered individuals I found completely engaging. Their lives have been, like so many of us, constrained by their past. The things they know and those they don’t. As a result, their ability to make decisions which will improve their prospects has become elusive. Family runs deep, but the author knows exactly which of the dark currents will help move the story forward and which are just places to become mired. Ms. Roebuck reveals exactly what a reader needs to know, or discover, without resorting to tricks and sleight of hand. She is a real storyteller with an elegant grasp of the importance of setting.

I really enjoyed Rising Tide, having spent quite a bit of my time on the water as well as puzzling through questions of my family and my own past. If you are like me, you’ll find Rising Tide absorbing and entertaining.
Had trouble getting into the book, but there was a worthwhile payoff at the end.
I've never been to Portugal, but reading Susan Roebuck's new book, Rising Tide, made me feel as though I were there. The description of the small town of Luminosa, a remote fishing village on the Alentejo coast is so well depicted I could smell the sea salt.
Luminosa sets the stage for a charming tale that is part mystery, part romance, and part thriller, with just a touch of magic thrown into the mix. The twists and intrigue kept me turning the pages, but even better were the characters, particularly the citizens of this village, characters so lovingly portrayed that I wanted to spend more time sitting in the local cafe, the Luminosa sea breezes wafting in, sipping coffee with them. I'd recommend Rising Tide to any reader who loves stories that transport you to a new place to share with characters so genuine they seem to walk off the page.
