Two Days Gone Ryan DeMarco Mystery Randall Silvis Books

TWO DAYS GONE is a dark novel and certainly not for the faint of heart. The crime that launches the book is the quadruple murder of a young family, wife and three children, including an infant. Knife. The husband, Thomas Huston, best-selling author and college professor, is seen wandering away from the house turned abattoir carrying a knife and heading into the woods.

Enter Pennsylvania State Police Sergeant Ryan DeMarco, a bit of a burn out case. Too much whiskey, too little sleep, an unhealthy relationship with his ex-wife, and carrying his own torment. DeMarco and Huston actually have a relationship, a slight friendship. DeMarco, as he uncovers more facts about the case, begins to think that the man everyone thinks has committed the crime may not have.

There is a bit of college intrigue, the denial of tenure, the expected student-professor trysts. There is a strip club with dancers and the proprietor all part of the story. And as there seems to be in every novel in which a major character is a writer, there is the novel within a novel.

There are enough stock characters to fill two novels, yet…

…Randall Silvis pulls it off, convincingly.

Fast paced, well-plotted, strong sense of place and characters that are much more fleshed out than a stereotype might suggest. All the characters fundamentally flawed, many severely damaged.

Make no mistake, this is a rough read. There are scenes that will upset you. Silvis has the courage to take this novel into territory few novelists would go. If you decide to join him for the ride, you will enjoy this gritty book.

Two Days Gone Ryan DeMarco Mystery Randall Silvis Books Reviews

This was a different type of book than I usually read. Yes, it's a murder mystery but it's a literary murder mystery. While I wouldn't want a steady diet of this "genre" I did appreciate this story and I plan on reading the next book in the series next WALKING THE BONES. This was definitely a character driven novel. That's not to say there wasn't an enticing plot. But the reader really gets into the heads of the characters in this story.

Thomas Huston is a college professor at a local northwestern Pennsylvania private school plus he's an acclaimed author. He has gotten to know and like Sergeant Ryan DeMarco of the Pennsylvania State Police while doing research on a novel and it's DeMarco that steps in when it's discovered that Huston's entire family has been slaughtered and Huston is missing. DeMarco doesn't want to believe that his friend could be capable of such heinous acts.

So the investigation begins and leads in unpredictable directions.

I enjoyed this book but it's not a light, fluffy read. It made me think and feel, maybe more than I wanted to.
Really funny dialogue between the detective and sergeant, that was my favorite part of the story by far. Unfortunately there were way too many loose ends, unexplained aspects of the story and in my opinion twists and turns that were totally unnecessary and retracted from the core of the plot. Was excited to see how things would tie together at the end, but they didn't for me and was left unsatisfied. Some pretty demented stuff in there that felt like it was thrown in for shock value more than anything.
I have just finished reading this book and I find it difficult to write a review. I've been wrapped in the most beautiful prose. I love older literary compositions..some of the contemporary do nothing for me...I never read a book more than once even though I am an avid reader,,,thinking of reading this one again right now!! Thank you Mr. Silvis !! Thank you doesn't seem like enough,,,,you awakened my soul ..I will be thinking about this book for a very long time
What do academia and a strip club have in common? Well, if I tell you that, it will give away some key parts of the story line of this book. In fact, if I tell you much of anything about this book, it will give away key parts which are best discovered by your reading of the book. I will say that I found it to be quite satisfying - although it is filled with sadness, grimness, hopelessness. There is also a certain innocence and the desire to achieve a proper justice for the victims - and there are many victims. Most of the characters are victims in some way. The author grabbed me from the opening pages and held on to me throughout the book. I was frustrated whenever I had to put the book down because I wanted to know "who done it," and why. Unlike many mysteries/police procedurals, the ending leaves you with the feeling that it fit the tone of the rest of the book.
When I began reading Two Days Gone, it didn't take me long to become pretty scornful. I immediately thought that here was an author who was trying awfully hard to be literary. The florid descriptions seemed a bit overdone, and I had yet to feel the darkness the author was trying to convey. Then the magic happened. The author's masterful storytelling skills drew me right into this story and I didn't leave this haunting tale until it was all said and done.

This is a brutal and heartbreaking story that blurs all the lines between fiction and reality, and introduces the reader to a complex, intelligent and fascinating investigator in Ryan DeMarco. The many literary references only serve to add to the ever grinding suspense and provide an unexpected depth to the despair that runs throughout this story. Truly terrible events are made even more so when viewed alongside the dark lyricism of Poe.

The plot unravels in a fashion that keeps the pages turning and kept my mind whirring with possibilities as I struggled to keep up with DeMarco and to understand the tragic Huston. The decision to allow us to see things from both perspectives was masterful and chilling. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel as it delivered a haunting, memorable tale in language that was rich enough to capture my imagination. The plot kept me guessing till the end, the suspense was relentless, and the characters broke my heart. I hope we see Ryan DeMarco again. I will be first to sign on for his next case.
